The next morning, Lydia stood in her driveway and kissed Eric, wanting nothing more than to grab his hand and run back inside. She had no memory of opening the front door to him in the wee hours, which caused her a certain amount of consternation, but waking up that morning feeling his warm heat against her back again made her wish for more mornings like that. Morning sex. A shared shower. Conversation and laughter over breakfast.

It had been hard when Caroline left, knowing that loneliness was going to become her constant companion. Caroline had even talked about wanting her to find someone special to share her life with. And now she had found someone that made her heart race…and it was only temporary.

Feeling Eric’s arms squeeze around her, she shivered as his breath moved across her ear. “Whatcha thinking about?”

She looked up and smiled, shaking her head slightly. “I’m thinking how glad I am that you decided to come to me, even if I was a zombie in the middle of the night.”

He laughed, and said, “I was glad you unlocked the door for me, but I have to say I’m a little concerned that you don’t remember it at all. I can only hope that you wouldn’t do that for someone else.”

“Well, I hardly think that a robber is going to call me and ask for entrance,” she quipped.

“You never know. You might end up with a polite robber who asks for permission to enter, and you grant it in the middle of the night and then not remember it.”

She liked this…the easy banter. The fun. The laughter. It had been a long time ago, but she remembered this with Tim. She used to wonder, if he had lived, what life would have been like. Would they have stayed happy? She liked to think that they would have.

“Your mind is moving all over the place this morning,” he said, peering closely at her.

Nodding, she knew it would be feckless to try to deny it. She leaned back and held his gaze, his eyes warm, but assessing. “I was just thinking how nice it is to have you here in the mornings. I know it’s only been two mornings, but I’ve loved waking up with you. Please don’t be embarrassed with me mentioning Tim, but I couldn’t help but wonder how nice it would’ve been all these years to have had someone to wake up with.” Giving her head a little shake, she continued, “I know that’s not what we are. We’re temporary, and I get that. But it’s been nice with you. It’s been good to spend time with someone that I truly like so very much.”

His arms tightened once again, and his lips curved in a gentle smile. “I’m not embarrassed to think that I have any comparison to Tim. From all you’ve told me, he seemed like a very good man and a good husband to you. I’m sorry for his loss and that Caroline was never able to really know him.
